Musikids Director, Kindermusik Maestro
For as long as I can remember, music has played an important role in my life.
My parents saw that I had a natural knack for music from a very young age. Although they could not play an instrument, they appreciated the art form. I’d sit in a room
where the record player was at the time and drift to another world.
I’d listen intently to the harmonies and wonder about the ease at which the composer related the music to lyrics or why it made me feel the way it did – sad, happy or alive! Whatever was on the stereo was devoured wholly and then analysed in my head with a fine toothcomb!
I began learning the piano at age 9, and completed AMEB exams in Pianoforte & Music Theory. This Music Education helped to prepare me for university and to complete a Bachelor of Music & Bachelor of Education. In 1994 I became a Secondary High School Music teacher after having the status of a Targeted Graduate. For 7 years, I taught the Year 7 – Year 12 Music Curriculum in NSW schools.
During these years, directing whole school Variety Nights, arranging pieces for and coordinating many school choirs, bands & instrumental groups helped strengthen my musical path. It was extremely satisfying to prepare & transport many of these groups to cultural events and eisteddfods so that the students could experience the exhilarating feeling of performing for an audience or competing in front of an adjudicator.
For 18 years I have taught the piano, classical guitar and music theory using the AMEB syllabus as well as my own methods & philosophies. Several students have become teachers of music or their chosen instrument themselves and remain friends to this day. In most recent years, I have enjoyed conducting community choirs and writing my own music.
In the year 2000, after finding & researching the Kindermusik curriculum, Kindermusik in Kathryn’s Corner was born in Corowa. I discovered that Kindermusik was the answer to how I could help make Music a part of a family’s life! In 2004 I changed the business’ name & decided to grow ‘Musikids’ by developing classes in Wangaratta, Albury & Wodonga. In 2006, I was awarded as a Kindermusik Maestro by Kindermusik International.
Musikids is what I am passionate about every day. It combines all of my loves – music, children, helping families and working with a positive team in a very special place. I have had the exceptional pleasure of being witness to so many first smiles, first hugs, first steps, first notes, first beats and final cries that I believe that this is the best ‘job’ ever!
If you believe in something so much & wake up each morning without any doubt that what you have in your hands is so precious, you just have to share it with the world!
